U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Rounding out its staff ahead of the 2025 season, Air Force Women's Gymnastics announced the addition of Johanny Sotillo Alston as Assistant Coach, the program announced on Monday.
Alston, who competed on uneven bars and balance beam at Iowa (2013-16) during Jennifer Green's tenure as an assistant for the GymHawks, arrives at the Academy with multiple years of coaching experience and a storied international competitive career under her belt.
"What a full circle moment, getting to be a part of Joso's collegiate career as an athlete and now a coach," Green said. "I feel honored! JoSo brings into our circle a wealth of knowledge and a passion for keeping moving the program moving forward. She truly believes in our mission and has a great deal of respect for the sacrifices our athletes are willing to carry out for others. I can't wait to watch her blossom in this atmosphere."
After graduating in 2016 from Iowa, Alston kicked off her coaching career acting as program director at the Iowa Gymnastics Academy in Iowa City from 2016-18. There, she instructed and helped develop gymnasts levels three to 10, crafted lesson plans, strength/conditioning programs and had a direct hand in guiding her athletes to Junior Olympic, state, regional and national titles. 2018-21, Alston served as a coach for Atlantic Coast Gymnastics in Williamstown, New Jersey – A program which, since 1986, has produced over 100 national qualifiers and dozens of collegiate scholarship recipients. Since, Alston has added stints in a similar capacity at both Littleton's 5280 Gymnastics Club (2022) and Willmoor Gymnastics in Mount Laurel, New Jersey (2022-2024).
From Valencia, Venezuela, Alston sharpened her skills on the international stage prior to joining the roster at Iowa, competing as a 10-time member of the Venezuelan National Team, showing twice each in both the Pan American Games (2007, 2011) and the Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) Artistic Gymnastics World Championships (2010, 2011).
Alston, a former NACGC Scholastic All-American and Academic All-Big Ten Honoree, completed her academic career earning a pair of undergraduate degrees in Sports Business and Sport Studies and a C.A. in Fitness Management, all earned at Iowa.
"Starting my collegiate coaching career under Coach Green is a tremendous opportunity," Alston said. "Her experience and mentorship provide a strong foundation, and her commitment to athlete development aligns perfectly with my coaching philosophy. Additionally, the Academy's emphasis on integrity and fostering excellence in all aspects while maintaining a supportive environment makes it an ideal fit for me to grow and contribute."
