Falcons Fall to SLU in Borderland Finale

EL PASO, Texas – A young Air Force volleyball lineup closed out the Borderland Invitational with a three-set loss to Southeastern Louisiana this afternoon (Sept. 7) in El Paso, falling in 16-25, 17-25, 17-25 sets.
Backed by a team-leading four assisted blocks from freshman Lainie Stapleton in her collegiate debut, the Falcons combined for 7.0 total stops (14 assisted). Fellow freshman Grace Fiaseu added three blocks, while she and classmate Mia Loyd, who led the team with 11 assists, accounted for two of the team's three aces. Junior Jordan Suan, the recipient of the other ace, tallied a team-high 15 digs, while senior Ella Tschuor led the team in kills with six.

Tschuor found the floor for the first point of the match, while Stapleton recorded her first collegiate point two plays later. The Lions scored nine of the next 10 points to take a 10-3 lead, but the freshman teamed up with junior Ashley Bible for a block and  sophomore Annamaria Ramos added a kill to cut the Falcons' deficit to 8-11. Tschuor added two more kills, while Suan served up an ace, and Fiaseu teamed with senior Mekayla Dedo for a block that pulled Air Force within two (14-16). Ramos and junior Greta Hans added kills, but Southeastern Louisiana used a late run to take the opening set 25-16.

Bible scored the Falcons' first two points of the second set, as she posted a kill and assisted on another Stapleton block by the 2-2 mark. A pair of strikes from Dedo maintained the Falcons' lead (7-6), but the Lions opened the game up with a 9-1 run to send Air Force into a timeout at the 15-8 mark. Fiaseu added a kill, ace and block, while Ramos – who assisted on the block – put down a kill and Loyd added to the Falcons' ace total, but Southeastern Louisiana took the set by 25-17 margin.

The Falcons and Lions traded the first six points of the third set, as Fiaseau and Tschuor tallied kills and the latter teamed up with Stapleton for a block. The Lions used a long scoring run to take a 12-4 lead, before Ramos and Stapleton put together a pair of kills to put the Falcons in double figures (10-17). Fiaseu, Dedo and Tschuor added scores, but the Lions completed the sweep with a 25-17 win.

Air Force has a quick turnaround this week, as it returns to action on Tuesday, Sept 10, to host in ate r Denver for the first of a home-and-home weekday series with the Pioneers.
