WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army scored two power-play goals in the third period and netted the game-winner in overtime for a 4-3 win over Air Force in an Atlantic Hockey America game Saturday, Jan. 18, at Tate Rink in West Point, N.Y. Army took five of the six points in the series.
Army (9-15-0, 9-8-0 AHA) scored first as Vincent Salice scored at 5:51 with a wrap around after Barron Woodring's shot was saved. Army outshot Air Force, 7-3 in the first 11 minutes of the game. The Falcons tied the game on Sam Jacobs' first career goal. Holt Oliphant forced a turnover in the neutral zone and Owen Dubois set up Jacobs on the left side at 11:36. In the final nine minutes of the period, Air Force outshot Army, 7-2.
Air Force scored two goals in the second period for a 3-1 lead. Freshman Ren Morque scored his first career goal with a wrister from the left point at 14:06. Nick Remissong and Mitchell Digby assisted on the goal that gave the Falcons a 2-1 lead. With 6:08 left in the period, Ausin Schwartz redirected a shot by Will Dawson for a 3-1 lead.
Midway through the third period, Army scored a pair of power play goals. Nils Forselius scored at 6:46 and Mac Gadowsky scored 67 seconds later at 7:53.
In overtime, Blessing made two saves on Army chances. On the rush, Gadowsky collected a puck in the circle and set up Jack Ivey with speed. Ivey scored the game-winner at 2: 49.
Air Force outshot Army, 30-23. Army was 2-for-3 on the power play and killed all three of Air Force's power plays. Blessing made 19 saves for the Falcons. Army's J.J. Cataldo made 27 for the Black Knights.
"We had no answer for their power play and no answer for Mac Gadowsky, he was the best player on the ice," head coach Frank Serratore said. The bottom line is Army found a way to get it done and we didn't. We failed, all of us, coaches and players. All losses hurt, but these hurt a little more."
Air Force (11-14-1, 8-8-0 AHA) returns home for a two-game league series with Holy Cross, Jan. 24-25, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
