FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sacred Heart goalie Ajeet Gundarah stopped all 26 shots he faced as the Pioneers defeated Air Force, 3-0, in an Atlantic Hockey America game, Friday, Jan. 3, at the Martire Family Arena in Fairfield, Conn.
After a scoreless first period, Sacred Heart opened the scoring at 4:09 of the second period. Pioneer Charles Tardiff took a shot that was saved by Guy Blessing and Jake Hewitt put back the rebound for a 1-0 lead.
SHU clung to the 1-0 lead until late in the third period. With just over three minutes left in the game, Falcon freshman Will Dawson collected a puck in the slot with Gundarah down on the ice. Dawson tried to go high with the backhand, but Gundarah made a glove save to hold the one-goal lead.
With 3:02 left in the third, Air Force pulled the goaltender for the extra attacker. After a save by Gundarah and a couple blocked shots by the Pioneers, SHU scored two empty-netters in a span of 23 seconds on goals by John Jaworski (1:37) Reid Pabich (1:14).
Sacred Heart outshot Air Force, 28-26. SHU was 0-for-1 on the power play while Air Force was 0-for-2. Guy Blessing stopped 25 of 26 in the game.
The same two teams conclude the two-game league series Saturday, Jan. 4, at 5:05 pm ET in Fairfield, Conn.
