JAKARTA, Indonesia -- A bronze medal at the World Gymnastics Championships capped a stellar 2025 campaign for pommel horse specialist Patrick Hoopes. The recent Academy graduate and current Air Force assistant coach became the first gymnast in program history to capture a medal at the world championships.
Representing Team USA as a member of the Men's Senior National Team, Hoopes scored a 14.566 to finish third in an event final that saw just 0.034 separate the three medalists – China's Yanming Hong: 14.600, Armenia's Mamikon Khachatryan: 14.600; Hoopes: 14.566). He recorded that same score during qualification to finish third in the full field of 129 gymnasts.
The native of Lehi, Utah, was one of five medalists for Team USA at the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Jakarta, as teammates Brody Malone and Donnell Whittenberg claimed gold on the high bar and still rings, respectively, in the men's championship and Leanne Wong (second, all-around) and Joscelyn Roberson (third, vault) medaled in the women's world final.
Hoopes had a stellar season on the pommel horse in 2025, as he repeated as the NCAA champion, captured his first U.S. national title, and made his debut on the international stage – medaling at two World Cup events (silver at Baku, bronze at Cairo) and finishing third at the World University Games, before claiming his latest bronze at the World Championships.
