LA JOLLA, Calif. – Late momentum for Air Force Women's Basketball on Saturday afternoon proved not enough to overcome a first-quarter barrage from UC San Diego, as the Falcons fell, 55-43, to the Tritons at LionTree Arena.
Senior Milahnie Perry's 15 points (7-18 FG) led all scorers for the game. Junior Jayda McNabb followed up, contributing 10-points and 14-rebounds to log Air Force's first double-double of the season.
Air Force found itself in a 22-4 hole after one quarter. A 14-2 UC San Diego blitz to start the game and 16 points off turnovers for the Tritons left Air Force with an early double-digit gap to overcome. The Falcons found their defensive rhythm in the second quarter, forcing the Tritons into five turnovers. Air Force capitalized on the Tritons' stalled effort, working up a 6-2 run to close the half. Despite the spurt, a 32-14 hill to climb remained for Air Force heading into the locker room.
Air Force entered the third quarter with a renewed energy, extending their run from the close of the first half to 10-2. UC San Diego opened the second half shooting 1-5 from the field, allowing the Falcons to cut their deficit to 34-20. The Falcons closed out their third quarter outscoring the Tritons 10-6 to trail 38-24 with 10 minutes to go.
Opening the fourth quarter, a three-pointer from freshman Bhret Clay along the right wing fell at the 8:27 mark, scoring the Falcons' first make of the game from beyond the arc. Air Force found itself within 11 points twice in the quarter but were unable to bridge the gap, trading scores with UC San Diego until the final buzzer.
Air Force (3-3, 0-0 MW) closed the game with an edge over UC San Diego in free throws made (six), rebounds (41) and bench points (nine).
