SAN DIEGO – Air Force Women's Basketball put forth a respectable showing on Wednesday afternoon on the road against San Diego State, but struggled to sustain offensive momentum, as the Falcons fell, 62-51, at Viejas Arena in San Diego.
Senior Milahnie Perry scored a game high 18 points (8-16 FG); Junior Jordyn Devaughn added 10 points (4-9 FG); Freshman Bhret Clay contributed nine points and added a career best seven rebounds; Senior Emily Adams added eight points and a game-high three steals.
Air Force trailed 14-11 at the close of the first quarter. SDSU and the Falcons opened the game locked in an early back-and-forth which held at a single possession for the majority of the first quarter. Perry scored her first basket of the afternoon, battling Aztec Nala Williams near the SDSU paint and landing a jumper at the elbow to beat the first quarter buzzer.
The Aztecs' lead inflated to 12 after SDSU opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run. The Falcons spent the rest of the first half whittling away at their deficit and cut it back to as little as four points inside the final minute, but a corner two from Aztec Nat Martinez left Air Force with a 28-22 San Diego State lead to manage after the half.
SDSU rapidly swung scoring back in its favor to open the third quarter, opening on an 8-0 run to push another 12-point lead. Air Force again mustered a response, cutting the Aztecs' lead in half, but struggled to score down the final five minutes of the quarter and faced down a 12-2 SDSU advantage to trail 49-32.
A Bhret Clay-fueled 7-0 run pulled Air Force back within 10 points in the early stages of the final quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Falcons paced SDSU in field goal percentage and outscored the opposition 19-13. Air Force closed the game on a 10-3 run in the final three minutes, but little time remained to mount a full comeback.
For the game, Air Force led San Diego State in free throw percentage (.727), steals (12) and tied the Aztecs in both points off of turnovers (13) and second-chance points (four).
