U.S AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Army goalie J.J. Cataldo made 33 saves and Nils Forselius scored two goals for a 2-1 win over Air Force in an Atlantic Hockey America game, Friday, Feb. 14, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
Army (13-16-1, 13-9-1 AHA) scored 24 seconds into the game when Forselius forced a turnover deep in the Air Force end and scored with a wrister from the left circle for a 1-0 Black Knights lead.
The Black Knights took a 2-0 lead on an odd-man rush in the second period. Jack Ivey gained the zone down the right side and set up Forselius in front for his second of the game at 7:58. Air Force (13-19-1, 10-13-0 AHA) got on the board late in the period. Defenseman Nolan Cunningham kept the puck in the zone and fed Nick Sajevic in the slot. Sajevic's shot was saved, but Sam Stitz put back the rebound at 18:21. The goal for Stitz was his third in his last three games and fifth of the season.
Air Force outshot Army, 16-1, in the third period, but was unable to get the equalizer. The Falcons pulled the goalie with 1:46 remaining and a shot by Chris Hedden with three seconds left by was blocked by Army forward Michael Sacco.
Air Force outshot Army, 34-12, in the game and had a 27-5 shot advantage in the final two periods. The Falcons were 0-for-3 on the power play and killed both of Army's power plays. Guy Blessing made 10 saves for the Falcons.
"We gave up a goal on the first shift of the game and chased the scoreboard the whole way," head coach Frank Serratore said. "The goal that our freshman line scored at the end of the second was massive. Cataldo was by far the No. 1 star of the game. If you don't win a period, you can't win the game and that was the case tonight,"
Air Force and Army conclude the two-game league series on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 5:07 pm MT, on senior night, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
