Air Force men's tennis defeated Navy, 4-0, in a non-conference dual Saturday night as part of College MatchDay at the USTA National Training Center in Orlando (Lake Nona), Fla. The Falcons earned their second-consecutive win over the Midshipmen.
Air Force won two of three in doubles for the first point. The duo of Phillip Deaton and Tyler Leaird defeated Aniketh Ayinala and JJ Etterbeek at No. 3, 6-4 for the first win. After Navy won at No. 1 doubles, the pair of AJ Moore and Langdon Tingleaf defeated Herrick Legaspi and Nathan Nguyen at No. 2, in a thrilling 7-6 win with an 11-9 tiebreaker.
In singles, Moore opened with a win at No. 4 over Luke Garner 6-2, 6-4. Deaton then won at No. 2 over Jake Young in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 to put the Falcons ahead 3-0.
Matthew Staton then clinched for the Falcons with the win at No. 5 over Ayinala in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to send the Falcons into celebration on the court.
The Falcon women's team also competed against Navy, falling 4-2.
Head coach Evan Urbina recapping the match:
"I'm very proud of the team win this evening versus a tough Navy team. This event in Orlando is one of the highlights of our schedule every year, and we've worked hard to prepare to be ready to compete our best. Doubles came down to the wire, with AJ and Langdon saving several match points to clinch for us. We started strong in singles as well, and we were able to keep the momentum as the match went on. Phil, AJ, and Matt closing out their matches in straight sets was key! It was awesome to see the team rush the court when Matt clinched. Those are great memories the guys will never forget. Our team manager, Josh Burke, coordinating the flyover deserves special recognition, and huge thanks to the USTA for putting on the military appreciation day event. So grateful for the parents and grads who came out to support. Go Falcons!"
Air Force returns to action Friday, Feb. 21, hosting Jacksonville State.
