USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force men's tennis defeated Jacksonville State, 5-2, Friday morning at the USAFA Indoor Tennis Courts in the Cadet Gym. The Falcons have won two in a row now, improving to 6-5 on the season.
The Falcons took two out of three in doubles for the first point. Phillip Deaton and Tyler Leaird two at No. 2 over Marko Milosavljevic and David Krasner 6-4. After Jax State won at No. 1 doubles, the duo of Arjun Kersten and Matthew Staton rallied to win at No. 3 over Tim De Visser/Logan Haga 7-6 (7-5) for the doubles point.
In singles, the Falcons rallied back from a 2-1 deficit by winning the last four singles matches.
Jax State opened with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles to take the 2-1 lead. The Falcons responded by winning the next three matches to rally to the win.
AJ Moore started the rally off with a win at No. 3 over Charlie Penman 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. Matthew Staton then won at No. 5 over Matei Palcau in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 to put the Falcons ahead 3-2.
Alec Fritzinger then came back from down a set to pull out the win at No. 4 over Krasner 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5). Fritzinger also trailed early in the third-set tiebreaker, before rallying 7-5 to clinch the match for the Falcons. Langdon Tingleaf capped the match with a win at No. 6, over Zach Murphy 5-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4).
Head Coach Evan Urbina recapping the match:
"It was a tough, hard fought win for the guys today. The margins are so thin in college tennis, and you saw that today. Phil and Tyler came back from a break down in their doubles match. We were solid in the doubles breaker on court three, and that set us up to be successful in singles. Alec saved multiple match points to win, AJ got early breaks in the third set and held on, and our two freshmen stepped up in the end. Coach Castro and Coach Irmischer were excellent working with guys in tight moments. It was a complete team performance today, and I'm very proud."
Air Force returns to action next weekend, March 1-2, at BYU and Weber State.
