U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Hosting San Jose State in Clune Arena on Wednesday evening, the Air Force Women's basketball team was able to exact a measure of revenge on the Spartans in a 78-54 win.
After San Jose State shot season highs from the field and from three-point range at home against Air Force on Jan. 11 to beat the Falcons in its highest conference scoring game to date, Air Force bit back on Wednesday, holding the Spartans to 21-59 (.356) shooting and just 3-19 (.158) from three to finish with its second-lowest scoring output since Mountain West play began.
Junior Milahnie Perry led all scoring in the game with 19 points (7-17 FG, 1-3 3FG, 4-6 FT, 2 AST, 3 STL); Sophomore Jordyn Devaughn fell one point short of her career high, putting up 15 points (5-12 FG, 1-3 3FG, 4-5 FT, 7 REB, 4 AST, 2 STL) on the night; Fellow sophomore Jayda McNabb logged her sixth career double-double, contributing 11 points and 10 boards.
Air Force and the Spartans exchanged five lead changes through the first ten minutes on the way to a 21-all tie at the end of the first quarter. The Falcons opened the game 10-21 at the Spartan rim, with McNabb's seven points (3-3 FG) leading all scoring. SJSU led by four in the final minute of the quarter, but a driving layup made by Keelie O'Hollaren followed by a converted steal at the first-quarter buzzer tied the game back up at 21-all.
The Falcons began to pull away midway through the second quarter behind a 12-point showing for Devaughn, whose solo 9-2 scoring run pulled Air Force out of the deadlock and into a double-digit lead that held the remainder of the game.
Up 42-29 at the start of the third, Air Force never looked back, inflating its lead by as much as 20 points. Five Falcons scored in the period, with Perry's five points leading a balanced attack. In the fourth, the Falcons' 20-point advantage held and inflated to as much as 27 points as Air Force shot .571 and 3-7 (.429) from beyond the arc to keep San Jose State at arms-length through the remainder of the contest.
