USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- Air Force senior pommel horse specialist and reigning NCAA champion Patrick Hoopes was named a finalist for the prestigious Nissen-Emery Award this morning (March 11), as the College Gymnastics Association announced the finalists for the highest honor in collegiate gymnastics.
Hoopes, who became the program's first-ever NCAA national champion last spring, is a two-time NCAA All-American on his signature event. He is also a two-time CGA Regular Season All-American, while collecting all-conference honors and the USAG pommel horse title in each of the last two years. The Winter Cup champion in 2024, Hoops was named to the U.S. Senior National Team and made his international debut with Team USA at the Baku World Cup that year. Over the summer, Hoopes captured the silver medal at the 2024 U.S. National Championships and finished first at the Olympic Team Trials.
His success on the pommel horse has continued into 2025, where he remains the only NCAA gymnast to surpass the 15-point threshold in any event under the new scoring system (15.150, vs California on Feb. 8). A three-time MPSF Specialist of the Week this season, Hoopes claimed national Specialist of the Week honors after winning the Rocky Mountain Open with a (then-best) 14.950 – a tally that continues to be the second-highest pommel horse score in the NCAA. A silver medalist at the 2025 Winter Cup, Hoopes secured his return to the U.S. Senior National Team and recently claimed his first international medal with a runner-up performance at the Baku World Cup last weekend.
Hoopes is eighth Falcon to be named a Nissen-Emery finalist, joining Terry Higgins (1968), Joel Miller (1992), Aaron Jackson (2003), Jeff Anderson (2004), Jake Schonig (2009), Tim Wang (2017) and Garrett Braunton (2024).
The Nissen-Emery award, which has been presented annually since 1966, is awarded to the year's most outstanding senior gymnast, who has established an excellent record of achievement during his collegiate career, set an example of good sportsmanship, and maintained a high standard of scholarship throughout his collegiate career.
Other finalists for the 2025 award, presented prior to the NCAA Championships next month in Ann Arbor, Mich., include Taylor Burkhart (Stanford), Taylor Christopulos (Nebraska), Emre Dodanli (Oklahoma), Joshua Karnes (Penn State), Kameron Nelson (Ohio State), and Khoi Young (Stanford).
