The History
The Falcons and Golden Eagles are meeting for the fifth time with Marquette leading the all-time series, 3-1. AF's win came in 2022 in Milwaukee, 16-9. Last season, MU doubled up Air Force, 12-6, at the Academy.
A Quick Look at AF
The Falcons are looking to get back in the win column after a setback at No. 9 Duke. The weekend prior (Feb. 28-Mar. 2), AF smashed two program records against Quinnipiac with 38 points and 17 assists on February 28. The back-to-back 20 goal games is the first time since 1995.
The offense is led by senior team captain Josh Yago and junior Caelan Driggs who combine for 63 points in seven games. Driggs leads the squad with 24 goals and has had five hat tricks this season highlighted by a pair of five-goal games at Ohio State and against Marist— he is first in the ASUN in goals per game (3.43) and second in the league in points per game (4.57).
Yago cleared the century mark in career points following the thrashing of Quinnipiac— he now has 115 career points and checks in at 10th in the record book. Yago is the squad's primary helper with 15 assists— he is 18th in the NCAA and second in the ASUN in assists per game (2.14). Yago's 57 career assists ranks him fifth in the record book, surpassing Mike Crampton ('14) who had 51.
At center X, senior faceoff specialist Daniel Haimes has won the most faceoffs in four of his seven appearances (56-55, .505). Senior faceoff specialist Jake Knapp is the alternate faceoff specialist, winning .429 of attempts. AF's key defender is Cole Cunningham who leads the team with 33 ground balls and averages 4.57 ground balls and a CTO per game. In goal, senior keeper Jake Marek has taken all seven starts. He has a .482 save percentage and a 12.38 GAA.
A Look at the Golden Eagles
Marquette will take the field at the Loyola Academy under the command of head coach Jake Richard in his first season, coming in hot off a win against ASUN rival Utah, 12-11. Richard was a two-time team captain during his Marquette playing career and led the Golden Eagles' unprecedented rise to national prominence in just four short seasons, culminating in their first BIG EAST Conference title and NCAA Championship appearance in 2016.
The MU offense is led by a trio of scorers in Nolan Rappis (2.57 GPG), Bobby O'Grady (2.29 GPG), and Carsen Brandt (2.00 GPG). At center dot, Adam Slager will likely get the start boasting a .581 faceoff win percentage. In goal, Lucas Lawas averages 9.14 saves per game and holds a 13.29 GAA with a .424 save percentage.
Last Time Out
Air Force had a bye week for games played the weekend of March 15. On March 8, despite three players Falcons scoring hat trick performances, Air Force fell to No. 9 Duke, 16-11, at Koskinen Stadium. Junior attacker Caelan Driggs led the Falcons with four goals, marking his fifth-straight hat trick and fourth game with four or more goals this season. Senior team captain Josh Yago scored his third-straight hat trick this season with a three-goal showing. Junior attacker Ryan Stadelmaier notched his first career hat trick in the first quarter for a career-best scoring performance.
