Jacksonville Tops Air Force in ASUN Opener, 15-11

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Falcon lacrosse team came up short against Jacksonville in the ASUN Conference opener, 15-11, Saturday afternoon at Rock Stadium. Air Force drops to 2-7 this season while the Dolphins improve to 6-3.
Significant Stats
-Junior attack man Caelan Driggs put up five goals on 10 shots, marking his fourth five-goal performance and sixth hat trick this season.
-Six Falcons accounted for the 11 goals, sophomore Charlie Pyfer and freshman Michael Frieri notched their first collegiate goals.
-Frieri won six faceoffs in 11 attempts to lead the AF effort at center X.
-Junior defender Cole Cunningham picked up a season best eight ground balls.
How it Happened
First Quarter
Jacksonville jumped out to a 3-0 lead with goals from Daylin John-Hill, Ethan LaMond, and Jack Taylor. Air Force's first goal came at the 7:46 mark via Driggs' unassisted attack. Jackson Intrieri extended the lead to 4-1 at 6:43 with help from Gavin Angell. The Falcons closed out the quarter on a two-goal run as Driggs and Ryan Stadelmaier scored with help from Cody Gross and Mana Wilhelm, respectively.
Second Quarter
Ethan Lamond pushed the pace for JU, scoring a pair of unanswered goals at 8:08 and 7:07 to give the Dolphins a 6-3 lead. Driggs scored his hat trick goal just four seconds later, Josh Yago was credited with the assist. Yago, one of the ASUN's top assisters, tallied another A at 5:56, this time helping Wilhelm score at 5:56 to bring AF within one. Cole Rassas assisted Stadelmaier with 53 seconds remaining in the half to tie the game up heading into the halftime break.
Third Quarter
Only three goals were scored in the third quarter, all by Jacksonville as the Falcons were unable to muster a goal. Intrieri, Nicky Brown and John-Hill lifted JU to a 9-6 lead to enter the fourth quarter.
Fourth Quarter
Ethan Lamond extended JU's lead to 10-6 just over a minute into the fourth quarter. AF killed the scoring run with a four-goal tear to tie the game at 11:12. Driggs (13:06), Pyfer (11:55), Yago (11:19), and Frieri (11:12) fueled the scoring run in unassisted attacks on the goal. JU responded with a three-goal run in just over two minutes. Driggs scored his fifth goal, the last AF goal of the game, at 5:38. The Dolphins' Jack Taylor scored the last three JU goals of the game.

Air Force returns to Falcon stadium for the first time in four weeks to host Bellarmine in ASUN action. The game is slated for a noon start and is the first of a two-game home stretch. The Falcons are 8-1 against the Knights when playing at USAFA.
