SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Air Force senior gymnasts Charlie Miles and Patrick Hoopes were honored by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation this afternoon (April 1), as Miles claimed his first MPSF Gymnast of the Week award and Hoopes was named the league's Specialist of the Week for the fourth time this season.
Headlined by a runner-up finish on the parallel bars, Miles captured USAG All-America honors in two events at last weekend's USAG Collegiate Nationals. Miles, a native of Houston, Texas, finished second on the parallel bars and sixth on the still rings during the individual event finals on March 29, while adding a seventh-place finish on the high bar. Miles collected a career-high 13.400 on the still rings during the team finals on March 28, while qualifying to the finals in every event he contested.
Hoopes captured the pommel horse title on March 29, marking the third-straight year that he has finished first on his signature event at the USAG Collegiate Nationals. The Lehi, Utah, native dominated the field during the event finals, scoring a 14.750 to hold a 1.40-point advantage over the rest of the field. The win came one day after he matched his NCAA-leading score of 15.150 to finish first in the team finals, bettering the field by nearly one point.
The Falcons return to the Academy this weekend, when they host their conference counterparts at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships this Saturday (April 5) at 4:00 p.m. (MT). Ninth-ranked Air Force will host top-ranked Oklahoma, No. 2 Stanford, and No. 10 California at Cadet West Gym.
