
Falcons Drop Late to Northern Colorado

GREELEY, Colo., - Air Force fell late in the game, 9-7, to Northern Colorado on Tuesday afternoon at Jackson Field. The Falcons secured nine hits, highlighted by four home runs, while the pitching staff combined to strike out eight Bears.
Zach Peters paved the way at the plate, batting 3-for-4 with a pair of homers and runs scored, along with three RBIs. Alex Adams and Chase Spencer accounted for the other two homers.
On the mound, Joey Collier took his first start of the season and threw a pair of strikeouts in two full innings, with two runs allowed. Gunner Gilmore appeared for 2.2 innings, striking out one batter and surrendering one run. Across two innings on the hill, Davis Rhyne recorded two strikeouts but gave up three runs. Following an appearance from Sam Hentges, who struck out two and allowed two runs, Patrick Davidson closed out the final inning with one run given up and one strikeout.
The Falcons sent all nine men in the lineup to the plate, putting up a 5-0 lead in the top of the first. For the second time this season, Chase Spencer homered as the lead-off batter while facing UNC.
Walker Zapp followed with a double to left field and scored on an RBI single hit by Zach Peters. The next batter, Tripp Garrish reached on a fielder's choice and proceeded to steal second base. After Christian Taylor drew a walk, Alex Adams sent a three-run shot over the left field fence for a trio of RBIs.
UNC quicky responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the same frame but still trailed, 5-2.
With two away in the top of two, Peters extended AF's advantage to 6-2 with his sixth home run of the season.
In the top of the fifth frame, Peters led off with another home run to put the Birds up 7-2. For the first time in his career, the senior recorded multiple homers in a single game.
The Bears plated one run but were still behind, 7-3, in the home half of the fifth.
The bottom of the stretch saw UNC score a trio of runs to trim the deficit to 7-6.
Northern Colorado shifted into the lead at 9-7, claiming the game in the bottom of the eighth.
