SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Air Force senior gymnast Patrick Hoopes added to his legacy this morning (April 3), as he was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's Specialist of the Year – becoming the first Academy gymnast to ever earn a year-end award from the conference.
Hoopes, a Nissen-Emery finalist and the reigning NCAA pommel horse champion, is having another strong season on his signature event. He became the first NCAA gymnast to break 15 points in any event under the new scoring system on Feb. 8, when he garnered a 15.150 during the Falcons' victory over California. He matched that NCAA-leading mark again during qualifying at the USAG Collegiate Nationals on March 28 and now owns two of the four 15-point performances in the entirety of the NCAA this season.
With a four-score average of 14.950, Hoopes is the current national leader on his signature event.
The Lehi, Utah, native captured his third-straight pommel horse title at the USAG Collegiate Nationals on March 29, bettering the field by 1.40 points. A silver medalist at Winter Cup, Hoopes returned to the U.S. Men's Senior National Team and earned three international assignments – a tour highlighted by a second-place finish at the Baku World Cup. Hoopes, who became the first Falcon in 14 years to win the pommel horse title at the Rocky Mountain Open, has been named the MPSF Specialist of the Week four times and the CGA Specialist of the Week twice this year.
Hoopes and his Air Force teammates return to the Academy this Saturday (April 5), when they host their conference counterparts at the MPSF Championships. The Falcons, ranked ninth in the NCAA standings, will welcome No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 2 Stanford, and No. 10 California to Cadet West Gym for the 4:00 p.m. (MT) showdown. Tickets can be purchased online at AFTickets.com.
