USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force men's tennis rallied to defeat Omaha (9-10), 4-3, in a non-conference match Thursday night at the USAFA Indoor Tennis Courts. The win snapped a two-game skid to the Mavericks, improving the Falcons to 9-8 on the season.
After giving up the doubles point to the Mavericks, the Falcons fought back in singles play, going 4-2.
In doubles, the duo of AJ Moore and Langdon Tingleaf won at No. 2 over Pavan Uppu and Ethan Gaubert 6-3. Air Force was unable to win at No. 1 and 3 to give up the point.
In singles, juniors Phillip Deaton and Moore won at No. 1 and 2 to put the Falcons ahead 2-1. Deaton won at No. 1 over Mikhail Korkunov 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. Moore won at No. 2 over Gaubert 7-5, 6-1.
Omaha tied it up with a win at No. 4. Junior Jack Brown then put the Falcons back ahead 3-2 with a win at No. 6. Brown took down Caleb Peterson quickly in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.
The Mavs tied the match up again with a three-set win at No. 3, with Bryan Kuntz out-lasting Alec Fritzinger 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 with a 10-8 third-set tiebreaker.
The match came down to the No. 5 match between freshman Matthew Staton and Uppu. Staton held off Uppu in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6, rallying back in the tiebreaker 7-5 to clinch the match for the Falcons.
Head coach Evan Urbina recapping the match:
"Tonight was a tough test yet again for our team. It was great to compete against Omaha. They are coached well and we knew it would be a battle. Phil got us on the board after losing the doubles point and AJ was able to improve his game in the second set. Alec and Langdon lost a couple heartbreakers in the third sets which meant it came down to five and six. We showed how deep we are as a team, as Jack was solid and confident, and Matt got his first 3-3 clinch to get us the win. It was good to have him back in the lineup. We're now turning our focus toward New Mexico this Saturday!."
Air Force returns to action Saturday, April 6, hosting #65 New Mexico.
