
Air Force Falls to UNLV in Game Two

LAS VEGAS, Nev., - Air Force baseball (20-33, 12-17) fell to the Rebels of UNLV, 10-4, on Friday evening at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. Falcon batters tallied five hits while the pitching staff combined to notch 12 strikeouts.
Tripp Garrish led at the plate, as he recorded a pair of RBI doubles. Christian Taylor and Chase Spencer were responsible for one RBI a piece.
On the mound, Cranz Smelcer (2-5) completed his tenth start of the season with a trio of strikeouts and five runs allowed in 2.1 innings. Bowen Brantingham threw two strikeouts and gave up a pair of runs in his 0.2 innings on the bump. With 3.1 innings pitched, Marcus Downing reached a new career-high accompanied by a pair of strikeouts and one run allowed. Following an appearance from Sam Hentges who struck out two Rebels and gave up a run, Easton Miller closed the game with three strikeouts and one run allowed.
The Rebels took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Air Force answered with a tying run in the top of two, 1-1. The inning's lead off batter, Zach Peters drew a walk and advanced to second on a single from Luke Elmore.The designated hitter, Garrish sent Peters across the plate on a double to the gap in left center.
UNLV posted six runs in the bottom of the third frame, shifting into a 7-1 advantage.
The top of the fourth saw the Falcons trim the deficit with a pair of runs, 7-3. Walker Zapp opened the inning with a walk and moved to third after Peters doubled down the left line. With one away, Taylor enabled Zapp to score with an RBI ground out. The next batter, Garrish, plated Peters after recording his second RBI double of the evening.
With one run in the bottom of five, the Rebels extended their lead to 8-3.
The Birds added their last run to the board, 8-4 in the top of the stretch. Alex Adams logged his second triple of the season and scored on a sacrifice fly by Spencer.
UNLV solidified the score at 10-4 with two runs, in the bottom of the eighth.
Air Force will take on the Rebels in the series finale on Saturday May 17 at 12 p.m. PT/1 p.m. MT.
