All-Time Versus the Scarlet Knights:
This matchup will mark the first meeting in program history between Air Force and Rutgers. The Falcons hold a 1-3 record against Big 10 opponents, Iowa and Washington.
Last Time Out:
The Falcons battled but fell short in the first military matchup across all the service academies, 2-1, to Army on Thursday August 21.
A late goal from Eleanor Musgrove put Air Force on the board. The team tallied a season-high nine shots on goal out of 19 total shots with career-high four saves by freshman Trishelle Lopez.
Annika Jost recorded a match-high three shots on goal and earned her first career assist, while Musgrove and Chase Borntreger each marked a pair of shots on goal.
In an aggressive first half, the Falcons maintained strong control of the midfield and saw multiple opportunities at the goal, but could not get past Karalyn Dail, Army's goalkeeper. Five shots, three from Jost and a pair from Borntreger were not enough in the first 20 minutes. At the 22' mark, the Black Knights crossed from the right side and jammed the ball into the back of the net for the first goal of the game.
The Black Knights opened the second half with a shot high above Lopez's reach to score at 56'. The Falcons saw key moments but came up empty on an indirect kick that was blocked in goal and a Borntreger shot from outside the box that hit off the right post. Despite being down, AF kept the power alive long enough to score. From behind the box, Jost pitched the ball to Musgrove who was able to finish with a header to the back left of the net at the 88' mark.
Back on the Pitch:
The Falcons have posted a goal in each game so far this season, from Peyton Ferrell, Eleanor Musgrove, and Caeli Sherman and have found 23 opportunities for shots on goal. On goal, Kendall Rippley leads with four shots, while Lauren Steinlage, Sherman, and Annika Jost account for three apiece.
Defensively, Jordan Dillingham has totaled 240 minutes playing an aggressive backline along with the pair of team captains, Samantha Sharp and Raine Komata.
In Goal:
The Falcons have started two different goalkeepers, Trishelle Lopez and Kylie McElroy. Against DU, freshman Lopez made her collegiate debut with a pair of saves and also played fulltime against Army, making four saves for a season save percentage of .600. Familiar face, McElroy took the start and played fulltime at Colorado, logging three saves in return to the goal.
A Look at Rutgers:
The Scarlet Knights hold a record of 2-0-1, defeating NJIT and Fairfield. They are coming off a 1-1 draw against Princeton, played on Friday August 22. Freshman Kennedi Cotter was responsible for Rutgers' sole goal off a penalty kick to even the field. Overall, the Scarlet Knights have recorded six goals, averaging two per game, with 17 shots on goal out of 37 attempts. On the defensive side, the pair of keepers have only allowed one goal, belonging to Princeton.
Up Next:
Air Force returns to Cadet Soccer Stadium for an intrasquad on August 29 before they head to Spokane, Wash., for a match at Gonzaga on Thursday September 4.
