Head Coach Laura Busby praised the effort, "I was proud of the way this team rebounded and gave a complete performance tonight. We had the focus of a playoff caliber team."
Air Force came out on the front foot, controlling possession and earning five corners with a pair of shots in the first 17 minutes. At the 19' Ellie McCarron served in a corner that Dillingham buried with a hard-fought header, her first collegiate goal, and broke the deadlock. The Bears threatened to respond, but Lopez logged three saves to help preserve the lead.
The Falcons carried their momentum into the second half, spending vital time in the attacking third. In the 71st minute, Doyle managed to move the ball up the right flank before passing straight across for Heap to place the ball to the back of the net, logging her first goal as a Falcon.
Just seven minutes later, Doyle threatened the same side of the pitch but found junior Kendall Rippley this time, who managed her first goal of the season after her right-foot finish for a 3-0 advantage.
The Bears trimmed the deficit in the 81st minute after Air Force committed a handball inside the box, allowing UNC to capitalize and score of a penalty kick for a final score of 3-1.
"It was a challenging non-conference schedule, but I am excited to take what we have learned with that confidence into GCU next weekend," said Busby.
Coach Busby added, "I would like to thank the Cadet Wing and our home fans for supporting us tonight. The home field advantage was huge!"
Air Force will open Mountain West play against conference newcomer Grand Canyon on Sunday September 28 in Phoenix, Az.
