Falcons Fall to Grand Canyon in MW Opener

PHOENIX, Ariz., - Air Force women's soccer (2-5-2, 0-1) fell to the Grand Canyon (6-4, 1-1) in their Mountain West opener, 4-2, on Sunday September 28 at GCU Stadium. The Falcons logged a season-high 18 shots on goal and saw Annika Jost score her third goal of the season, while Chase Borntreger scored her second.
In goal, Trishelle Lopez managed four saves and freshman Ellie McCarron notched her second career assist.
An action-packed first half featured five goals and 19 shots between the two programs, with Lopes' forward Reese Clem converting off a free kick in the second minute. Air Force was quick to respond through Borntreger who fired a trio of early shots before driving one in from distance and deflecting off a GCU defender, for her second goal of the season at the 12' mark, leveling the score at 1-1.
The Falcons pulled ahead, 2-1, when McCarron fed Jost from the left side of the pitch, allowing Jost to chip the ball out of the goalkeeper's reach at 15'.
Grand Canyon retaliated with a goal at 17', once again from Clem, to even the match and utilized their momentum to take a 3-2 lead with a goal from Grace Bartlett in the 28th minute.
Out of the locker room in the second half, the Falcons held strong possession, but the Lopes sealed the match at the 83-minute mark with a header rebound from Ellie Johannes, finalizing the score at 4-2.
Air Force looks to host Utah State on Thursday October 2 at 6 p.m. MT at Cadet Soccer Stadium for their first home Mountain West match.
