LARAMIE, Wyo. -- Air Force volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Wyoming this afternoon (Sept. 27) in its first road match of the young conference season. The Falcons fell 19-25, 19-25, 16-25 at the UniWyo Sports Complex in Laramie to finish the opening weekend of Mountain West play with a 1-1 mark.
Sophomore Alysa Walker led the Falcons with 10 kills, while senior Ashley Bible added eight and served up the team's lone ace. Sophomore Mia Loyd and senior Jordan Suan led the team in assists (18) and digs (10), respectively, while sophomore Grace Fiaseu accounted for a team-high three blocks – including a solo stop.
The Cowgirls took an early 3-1 lead to start the match, but the Falcons quickly came back to take a 7-6 lead behind kills from Bible (two), Walker, Loyd, sophomore Brooksie Isham, and senior Alex Hatchett. Wyoming responded with a 7-1 run and, despite a kill from Isham and an ace from Bible, pushed their lead out to nine (19-10). Walker put down a pair of kills and teamed up with Fiaseu for a block, as the Falcons used a 7-2 run to pull within four at the 17-21 mark. Fiaseu also accounted for a kill during that run, while Loyd, Hatchett and Isham added scores. Bible recorded one more kill, but the Cowgirls scored four of the final six points to secure the 25-19 win.
Isham opened the second set with a kill, while a kill and block from Walker (with Hatchett) helped Air Force maintain an early one-point lead (4-3). The Cowgirls retook the lead and, despite kills from Fiaseu, Loyd and Walker, pushed their advantage out to five (15-10) by the media timeout. The Falcons received a pair of kills from Bible, while Walker and sophomore Bella Christensen also produced points as Air Force remained down five (14-19). Fiaseu tallied a pair of blocks (solo, assist with Walker) and Christensen put down another kill, but Wyoming took the second set by another 25-19 margin.
Despite an early kill from Bible, Wyoming rolled out to a fast 10-4 lead. The teams traded the next six points, with Air Force earning scores from Walker, Christensen and Bible, but back-to-back scores from the hosts saw Wyoming double-up the Falcons at the 14-7 mark. The Falcons earned consecutive kills from Suan and Isham, while an errant serve from the Cowgirls put Air Force in double figures (10-17). Kills from Fiasue, Walker and Isham highlighted a 5-2 run by the Falcons that pulled them within three at 15-18, but Wyoming responded with seven of the final eight points to claim the sweep with the 25-16 win.
The Falcons are back at the Academy next week to host San Diego State and UNLV in the only meetings of the season with those two schools. Air Force will host the Aztecs for the final time as MW opponents on Thursday, Oct. 2, before welcoming the Rebels to Cadet East Gym on Saturday, Oct. 4.
