ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Air Force volleyball team downed Navy this evening (Sept. 5) during a service academy showdown at Wesley Brown Field House on the grounds of the USNA in Annapolis. Backed by a well-balanced attack, the Falcons remained undefeated on the year with the 28-26, 23-25, 25-22, 25-17 victory over the Mids in a back-and-forth thriller.
It was a well-balanced win for the Falcons, with four Falcons accounting for double-digit kills in the match. Sophomore Grace Fiaseu led Air Force with 14 kills on .480 hitting (14-2-25), while classmate Alysa Walker added 13 and the senior duo of Alex Hatchett and Ashley Bible added totals of 11 and 10, respectively. Bible also led the team in digs (14), while Hatchett and Fiaseu accounted for a team-leading four blocks (two solo, two assisted for Hatchett; four assisted for Fiaseu). The sophomore added a pair of service caes, while classmate Mia Loyd notched her second 50-assist match of the season (50) and added 11 digs for her third double-double in four contests.
With two kills each, Fiaseu and classmate Bella Christensen combined for four of the Falcons' first six points (6-7), but the Mids scored four of the next five to break up the back-and-forth play and take an 11-7 advantage. Air Force responded with four-straight points that included kills from Bible and Walker, as well as a solo block from Hatchett, to return the deficit to one (11-12). Navy scored five of the next six to go up 17-12, but the Falcons quickly returned the favor – using a 5-1 run of their own to pull back within one (17-18). Bible added a pair of kills, but the Midshipmen pushed their lead out to 23-20. Two kills from Fiaseu, another strike from Christensen and a service ace from senior Jordan Suan were featured during a 4-0 run by the Falcons that put Air Force at set-point (24-20). Navy followed with two points to take its set point at 25-24 and maintained that mark at 26-25, but a kill from Walker and a pair of errant attacks by the Mids gave Air Force the 28-26 win.
Navy struck first in the second, but a pair of kills from Hatchett helped Air Force to the early 3-2 lead. A kill from Walker extended the Falcons' advantage to two at the 6-4 mark, while Fiaseu and Bible maintained that margin at the 8-6 mark. Navy tied the set at nine and Air Force evened it at 11 off a kill from Bible. The Mids went into the media timeout holding a 15-13 lead, but Fiaseu pulled the Falcons back to one with a Loyd-assisted block (15-16) and kill (16-17). Back-to-back kills from Bible and Hatchett helped cut a three-point deficit down to one (19-20), while three-straight strikes from Christensen, Walker and Fiaseu helped tie the set at 23, but Navy captured the final two points to event the match with a 25-23 win in the second.
Navy registered the first three points of the third, before Christensen stopped their run with a kill. After Air Force called a timeout at the 2-5 mark, a Christensen/Hatchett block and a Fiaseu kill pulled the Falcons within one at the 4-5 mark. The Falcons tied the set at nine off a kill from Hatchett and the senior added a second strike during a four-point run that tied the set at 12. The teams traded the next several points, with Air Force earning set-tying scores from Fiaseu (13, 15) and Walker (14). A kill form Bible gave Air Force its first lead of the set (16-15), while Fiaseu added an ace on the ensuing serve. Air Force quickly pushed its lead to six (23-17) during a run that included two aces from Loyd, a kill from Bible and multiple scores from Hatchett (kill, block with senior Savanah Johnson). Navy scored four of the next five, but Fiasue put down the final kill for the Falcons' 25-22 victory.
Hatchett put down the Falcons' first two points of the fourth to tie the set at two, while a strike from Walker helped Air Force take the lead at the 4-3 mark. The Falcons pushed their advantage out of three (9-6) during a stretch that included a kill from Fiaseu and an ace from Walker. Navy scored the next four to retake the lead (10-9), but the Falcons scored six of the next seven to head into the media timeout with a 15-11 advantage. Bible registered a pair of kills during that run, while Fiaseu served up another ace and Johnson put down a kill. Navy pulled within two at the 18-16 mark, but that was as close as they got, as Air Force closed the game on a 7-1 run to secure its first win over the Mids in four meetings. Walker set down two kills during the run, while the Falcons collected a pair of blocks – including a solo stop from Bible. With the match-clinching 25-17 win, Air Force improved to 13-4 lifetime against the Mids and took an impressive 9-1 record in Annapolis (4-0 at Wesley Brown Field House).
At 4-0 to start the 2025 season, Air Force has already surpassed its win total from last year.
Air Force continues action at the Kristen Dickmann Invitational tomorrow (Sept. 6), when they face Wake Forest at 3:00 p.m. (ET) inside Wesley Brown Field House. For fans attending the contest, parking will be available at the Navy Medical Center.
