US. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, CO – Lindenwood scored three goals in the third period to secure a 7-4 victory over Air Force in a non-conference game, Friday, Oct. 16, at Cadet Ice Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo.
In a first period that saw four total goals, it was the Falcons who were first on the board after freshman Brady Arneson recovered a shot in the high slot and fired it over the left shoulder of Lions' goalie Klayton Knapp to give Air Force a 1-0 lead. The goal came on the power play after freshman Duke Gentzler drew a roughing penalty.
A minute and a half later, it was Arneson again who potted his second goal of the game, redirecting a low shot from senior Nolan Cunningham inside the right post to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead at 7:30 in the period.
Lindenwood responded with a pair of power-play goals from Kim Elfving and Caden Brown that ultimately led the two teams into the first intermission tied 2-2.
It only took 25 seconds in the second period for the Lions to take their first lead of the game, scoring yet another power-play goal from Michael Bevilacque to take a 3-2 lead out of the locker rooms.
Lindenwood took advantage of another power-play opportunity after freshman Grant DeNuccio got his stick up high for a five-minute major and a game misconduct. The Lions took a 4-2 lead when Noah Dziver scored with 10:40 remaining in the period.
Air Force slowly flipped momentum, killing off the remaining 4:15 of the five-minute major and generated several good scoring chances. They finally broke through, however, when freshman Harper Searles won an offensive zone draw and put a pass right on the tape of senior Brendan Gibbons in front of the net. Gibbons immediately snapped a one timer just under the cross bar to cut the Falcons deficit 4-3 with 4:46 left in the period.
A delayed penalty gave Air Force a man advantage which they used to find the equalizer. Following a creative zone entry, senior Owen Dubois sent a puck to the point for junior Jake Peterson. Peterson's shot was saved by Knapp, but Gibbons rifled the rebound into the back of the net for his second goal in two minutes. The tally tied the game 4-4 heading into the third period.
Lindenwood took a 5-4 lead with 13:28 remaining in the game when freshman Andrew Earl scored his first career goal. The Lions extended their lead on a pair of breakaway goals by Andrew LeBlanc at 12:29 and 14:42 as Lindenwood travels back to St. Louis, Mo. with a 7-4 victory.
Special teams played a huge role in the Lions' success, scoring four of their seven goals on the power play while killing off two-of-three Falcon man advantages. The Lions also outshot the Falcons 41-33.
Brady Arneson now leads the Falcon offense with four goals on the young season, notching all four this series. Brendan Gibbons potted his first two of the season as well.
"It was a chaotic game," head coach Frank Serratore said. "We are not very well connected right now. We have five injured forwards and it almost like we are starting over again with new many new faces. We took some avoidable penalties tonight. We got off to that 2-0 lead, but nothing is safe with a team like that. They have some legit offensive players. Give them their due. We are giving up over 40 shots per game and we have to get better quickly in front of Dom."
Air Force is back in action Friday, Oct. 23, where they are set to take on Colorado College at Ed Robson Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo. Puck drop for that game is at 7:05 MT.
