COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado College, ranked 11th in the nation, scored two goals in each period for a 6-2 win over Air Force in the first game of the battle for the Pikes Peak Trophy, Friday, Oct. 23, at Robson Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo. Colorado College has held the trophy since 2018 and will at least retain the trophy this season.
Colorado College (4-1-0) opened the scoring in the first four minutes of the game as Ryan Koering scored from Zach Olson and Mats Lindgren at 3:56. Midway through the period, a puck took a bad bounce off the back boards and William Bjorck set up Klavs Veinbergs at 10:55. Air Force had 90 seconds of a 5-on-3 in the opening period, but the Tigers blocked three shots and Jackson Unger made a save to kill the penalties.
The Tigers outshot the Falcons, 17-6, in the second period and scored two goals for a 4-0 lead. CC's Carmelo Crandall redirected a shot by Max Burkholder on a delayed penalty at 11:39. CC took a 4-0 lead on the power play when Bjorck scored with a wrister from the right side at 15:37.
At the start of the third period, Falcon freshman goalie Jack Solomon replaced Dominik Wasik for his first collegiate action. Air Force opened the third period on the power play and the Falcons found the back of the net. Beau Janzig's shot was blocked, but Harper Searles put back the rebound just 18 seconds into the third period on the power play. The Tigers answered quickly with two goals in a span of 32 seconds. Colton Roberts scored at 2:35 and Fisher Scott scored at 3:07 for a 6-1 lead. Air Force sophomore Jake Peterson scored his first of the season with a one-timer from Simon Houge and Owen Dubois at 17:16.
Colorado College outshot Air Force, 33-25. The Falcons were 1-for-7 on the power play while CC was 1-for-2. Wasik made 22 saves in 40 minutes while Solomon made five saves in 20 minutes. For the Tigers, Jackson Unger stopped 23 of the 25 he faced.
"They are a very good team," head coach Frank Serratore said. "They are big and strong and made some plays. We had that 5-on-3 in the first period and we didn't score. We needed one there. But we did some good things in this game. We cut down the number of quality shots allowed and we cut down on our penalties. We will see if we can take another step tomorrow to gain some traction going into conference play next week."
Air Force (2-3-0) and Colorado College meet in game two on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 7:05 pm MT at the Cadet Ice Arena.
