COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A pair of Air Force track and field athletes were recognized by the Mountain West this afternoon (Feb. 3), as senior Texas Tanner captured his eighth MW Field Athlete of the Week award and first-year Falcon Zachary DeWalt was named the MW Freshman of the Week for the first time.
Tanner reset his own Air Force Record in the shot put during a winning performance at the DeLoss Dodds Invitational on Jan. 31. The senior unleashed a throw of 19.83 meters (65'0¾") to win the meet, break the Facility Record at the Cliff Rovelto Indoor Track, and move up to No. 3 in the NCAA this season. That throw, which also improved his own Service Academy Record, bettered the overall field by nearly two meters. Tanner also collected a third-place distance of 22.52 meters (73'6¾") in the weight throw on Jan. 30.
Backed by top-10 finishes in both the 200- and 400-meter races, DeWalt had an impressive weekend against six nationally ranked teams at the DeLoss Dodds Invitational. The top freshman finisher in both events, DeWalt accounted for a fourth-place time of 48.74 in the 400-meter dash – the second-fastest time by any collegiate runner – and an eighth-place time of 21.67 in the 200-meter dash.
Air Force is back in action this weekend (Feb. 6-7), when it heads to Boulder for the Colorado Classic.
