Air Force Women's Tennis, taking on the Denver Pioneers, fell 4-0 on Friday afternoon at the Denver Tennis Park.
The Falcons took DU to the brink in doubles, but fell by just a hair. Air Force and DU split results on courts three and one in order, with the Pioneers striking first with a 6-1 win over freshman duo Yule Kang and Jaraihlyn Rhoades. The Falcons evened the score on line one; Sophomores Sofia Mavor and Shivaani Selvan played senior 2025 All-Summit League honorees Hana Becirovic Novak and Marley Lambert to a 3-all tie, before claiming a final the lead and closing out with a 6-4 Falcon win.
Doubles would be decided on line two, where senior Arianna Van Houweling and junior Nadia Kojonroj faced Pioneer pair Louise Wikander and Yunfei Cai. Both teams locked into a stalemate from the first serve, with neither gaining more than a one-game advantage throughout the set. Van Houweling/Kojonroj held a lead at 6-5 and threatened a Falcon clinch, up 30-0. Denver rallied to force the tiebreak before taking down the Falcons 7-3 to secure a 1-0 Pioneer lead.
In singles, the Falcons dropped matches on courts six (Cai vs. Joselyn Limbago, 6-1, 6-0), five (Novak vs. Selvan, 6-0, 6-4) and one (Wikander vs. Mavor, 6-4, 6-1) in order to secure the shutout. Kang, squaring off against two-time All-Summit League honoree Zoe Adkins, led by as much as 4-1 in her opening set against Adkins and led 5-4 before her match was called off. Van Houweling, facing Lambert on court three, raced out to a 6-1 start before falling 6-0 in her second set. The Air Force senior trailed Lambert in their third set, 3-1, when the clinch ended her match. Kojonroj trailed sophomore Natalie Cinkova 5-3 in her second set after falling 6-1 in the first when her match was called.
Head Coach Taylor Hollander's Impressions Following Friday:
"Denver is a tough team, but I'm proud of how our group showed up and competed. We took the lessons from last week's loss and applied them this week, and it showed in our play. We had to make some last-minute adjustments as a team, and it was great to see everyone step up to the challenge."
