
Women’s Tennis Falls to Army at College MatchDay

ORLANDO – Air Force Women's Tennis was within reach of a win on Saturday evening against Army but was unable to overcome, falling 4-2 to the Black Knights at College MatchDay in Orlando.
The Falcons fell behind 1-0 after dropping the doubles point on lines one and three. Despite the loss, senior Abby Cotuna and sophomore Sofia Mavor scored their first win of the spring season in a shutout doubles set, 6-0, against 9-0 Army duo Olivia Mellynchuk/Emily Ruckno.
In singles, both Falcon seniors Cotuna and Arianna Van Houweling were the first off of their courts, scoring a pair of straight-set wins to give Air Force a 2-1 advantage in the match. Cotuna defeated Army's Madison Smith, 6-4, 6-3, to pick up her second win of the season, snapping a six-match win streak for the West Point junior. Van Houweling toppled Emma Sy, 6-3, 6-2, to pick up her second-straight win while handing Sy her second loss in 10 matches.
Air Force fell in grind-it-out, three-set battles on courts four (Chaeyule Kang vs. Emily Ruckno), five (Nadia Kojonroj vs. Ylan Duong), and six (Shivaani Selvan vs. Stacey Samonte) to secure an Army win. On court two, Mavor, facing Army's Vennmukiil Mathivanan, split sets with her West Point opposition and led 5-4 in the third when her match was abandoned.
