
Women’s Tennis Picks Up 4-2 Win Over Davidson

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo – Air Force Women's Tennis closed out non-conference action on Thursday afternoon on the highest of notes, downing Davidson, 4-2, in Cadet East Gym.
Air Force raced out to a 1-0 lead behind a pair of doubles wins on lines three and two in order. Maya Michalski/Jariahlyn Rhoades got out to a 4-1 lead over Davidson's Olivia Hooper/Keri Rothenberg before dispatching of their Wildcat opponents in a 6-1 set win. With the win, Michalski/Rhoades improved to 3-0 as a pair. Senior Arianna Van Houweling and sophomore Sofia Mavor secured Air Force's third-straight clinched doubles point and fourth in their last five matches, defeating Charlotte Calderwood/Ellie Hammond 6-4. Prior to Thursday's outing, Calderwood/Hammond were 10-2 as a pair, sporting eight wins in their last 10 doubles sets.
No. 64-ranked Abby Cotuna/Sofia Mavor led 9-5 Davidson pair Kollock/Langford 5-4 and threatened a win when the Falcons clinched doubles.
In singles, Air Force extended its lead to 2-0 behind a straight-set win for freshman Yule Kang over DC's Calderwood. After battling through a 6-4 opening set, Kang dominated the rest of the way, securing her court behind a 6-0 shutout second.
Van Houweling, taking on Wildcat Bryson Langford on line two, fell in two sets, getting Davidson on the scoreboard. Cotuna, on court one, reclaimed the Falcons' two-point lead with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Savanna Kollock. Cotuna pulled off a 6-3 opening set against her Davidson opposition. Kollock pulled into an early lead in the second and was up 4-2 when Cotuna rallied to win four-straight and secure a 3-1 Air Force advantage on the day. Cotuna's second-straight victory improved the senior's dual singles record to 4-5 this spring.
On line three, Mavor fell in two sets to Wildcat Ellie Hammond, leaving the final decision up to courts five (Jariahlyn Rhoades vs. Rothenberg) and six (Nadia Kojonroj vs. Olivia Hooper). Kojonroj powered through a 6-1 opening set against Hooper then built a 5-1 advantage in the second to threaten the clinch. Hooper rallied, scoring three-straight game wins before Kojonroj took a decisive 5-4 game to secure an Air Force win.
