
Sanders Sets Freshman Scoring Mark In Setback To GCU

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force men's basketball fell (3-27, 0-19 MW) to Grand Canyon (19-11, 12-7 MW), 86-60, in Mountain West action Tuesday night at Clune Arena. Freshman guard Kam Sanders led the Falcons with 18 points, and in the process, set a new Air Force record for points by a freshman.
Grand Canyon shot 56 from the field, knocking down nine three's on the night. The Lopes had five players in double figures scoring, led by Jaden Henly who scored 17 points.
Grand Canyon started the game on a 17-2 start and the Falcons were battling uphill the rest of the game. The Lopes shot 59 percent from the field in the opening half to lead 43-24 at the break.
After being held to 24 points in the opening half, the Falcons scored 36 points in the second half.
Sanders now has 374 points on the season, surpassing the previous record of 368, done 39 years ago by Raymond Dudley in 1987. Sanders also led the Falcons with five assists and went 6-for-8 from the line.
Freshman Lucas Hobin also reached double figures in scoring for the Falcons with 11 points. Hobin went 6-for-6 from the line, extending his streak of consecutive free throws made to 23. Hobin and sophomore Eli Robinson tied for the team-lead with six rebounds. Junior Wesley Celichowski added four assists.
Air Force got to the free throw line 26 times, making 18. It was the most in a MW game and the most since making 19 against Pacific.
Air Force caps the regular season this Saturday, March 7 at Nevada. The game tips at 7 pm PT and will be televised by NSN and streamed on the MW Network.
