AZUSA, Calif. – Sophomore Morgan Glaser became the first Air Force athlete to surpass 5000 points in the heptathlon this afternoon (April 10), as capped a record-setting outing at the Bryan Clay Multis that saw the program's heptathlon record fall twice in a span of two hours.
Glaser, competing in her first collegiate heptathlon, amassed 5011 points to break an Air Force Record that classmate Sarah Reynolds had set two hours earlier with a 4939-point performance in her section.
As a member of Group A, Glaser was the last Falcon to start competition at Cougar Stadium on Friday. The sophomore kicked off her day with a 628-point distance of 5.25 meters (17'2¾") in the long jump – a mark that placed her at No. 22 on the Academy's all-time standings. She added a 531-point debut of 32.87 meters (107'10") in the javelin, before closing out the day with an 857-point time of 2:17.58 in her first 800-meter run to secure her record-setting 5011-point performance.
Reynolds kicked off the record-setting afternoon at the conclusion of the Group C competition, where she amassed a (then) program-best 4939 points to finish third in her 13-athlete field. Reynolds, who improved her personal total by nearly 350 points, recorded distances of 5.25 meters (17'2¾") and 25.37 meters (83'3") in the long jump (628 points) and javelin throw (389 points), respectively, before closing out the meet with an 808-point time of 2:21.11 in the 800-meter run.
In addition to their final totals, the pair also accounted for six Air Force Heptathlon Event Records. Reynolds set heptathlon-best marks in the hurdles (14.54), shot put (11.24m/36'10½") and first day total (3114 points) during Thursday's action – bettering previous event standards that had stood for at least 20 years, while Glaser improved the high jump mark on Thursday (1.71m/5'7½") and reset the 800-meter (2:17.58) and second day (2016) marks on Friday.
Junior Kayla Beach finished her two-day competition with 4516 points and a 13th-place finish in Group B. She posted her highest point-total of the day (715) in the long jump after recording a wind-aided leap of 5.55 meters (18'2½"), while accounting for 467 points in the javelin throw (29.47m/96'8") and 580 points in the 800-meter run (2:39.36).
Several Falcons will travel to Golden, Colo., tomorrow (April 11) for the Kit Mayer Classic, while senior Texas Tanner will continue the Oklahoma Throws Series' World Invitational tomorrow (a full recap of Tanner's week at Throw Town Ramona will be posted after his final competition on Sunday).
