GOLDEN, Colo. – A small contingent of athletes from the Air Force track and field team represented the Academy at the Kit Mayer Classic this afternoon (April 11) in Golden. The Falcons captured two first-place finishes and made a pair of improvements to the program's all-time standings.
With a throw of 54.90 meters (180'1"), sophomore Evan Keefe picked up his third discus title of the season and led the Falcons to three finishes within the top half of the 18-thrower field. Senior Massimo Grisotto added a third-place mark of 51.78 meters (169'10"), while freshman Ian Morris finished eighth with a throw of 45.71 meters (150'0").
Junior Tanner Woodring cleared 4.82 meters {15'9¾") to finish second in the pole vault, while freshman Chri Atunku took fourth in the high jump (1.96m/6'5") and sophomore Trevin Jordan used a throw of 16.43 meters (53'11") to place sixth in the shot put.
On the women's side of the field lineup, freshman Mackenzie Fah moved up to No. 11 on the program's all-time shot put standings following a career-best, fourth-place throw of 13.18 meters (43'3"), while sophomore Caroline Carrico added a 12.07-meter (39'7¼") throw to match the 21st-best throw in program history. Freshman Julie Segroves and sophomore Barrett Boyd closed out the day finishing third (3.77m/12'4½") and fourth (3.62m/11'10½"), respectively, in the pole vault, which was moved indoors due to late afternoon winds in Golden.
Despite a limited number of middle-distance running events on the schedule, Air Force came away with one first-place finish and at least one top 10 finish in every contested event.
Freshman Josh Shriver paced the small contingent with a first-place time of 9:34.88 in his steeplechase debut, while senior Jevonte Eaves earned a runner-up finish in the 800-meter run (1:52.89). Shriver was one of three Falcons to place within the top 10 of the 29-runner event, as senior Ashton Higgerson and freshman Auge Martin placed eighth (9:53.96) and ninth (9:56.25), respectively, while freshman Ryan Daley joined Eaves in the top six of the 25-man 800-meter event (sixth, 1:54.22).
Elsewhere, junior Joseph White finished fourth out of 37 runners in the 1500-meter run (3:55.03) and classmate Scarlet Fetterolf – the only member of the women's team to run on Saturday – posted a sixth-place time of 2:18.87 in her first 800-meter run.
After a split weekend of competition, the Falcons travel to Southern California next week for the Bryan Clay Invitational (April 16-18), Pacific Coast Intercollegiate (April 16) and Beach Invitational (April 17-18).
