LONG BEACH, Calif. – Air Force junior Allison Fernstrom reset her own program standard in the 400-meter hurdles and senior Texas Tanner broke the program's 10-year-old record in the shot put on Thursday (April 16), as the track and field team opened a busy weekend at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in Long Beach. Overall, the Falcons accounted for nine Air Force Top 10 marks, with Fernstrom leading the women to three of the four-fastest intermediate times in Air Force history.
Just 12 days after breaking an intermediate hurdles record that had stood for four years, Fernstrom easily lowered the Academy standard again. Dropping 0.34 seconds off her previous best, the junior reset the Air Force Record at 59-flat to finish fourth in a field of 34.
Tanner secured the final Air Force Record in the rotational throws, as he launched an outdoor shot put debut of 19.24 meters (63'1½") to win the 60-thrower event and capture his final Air Force Record in the rotational throws. Bettering the field by nearly three feet, Tanner added nearly two feet to a standard Grant Hamilton had held since 2016. The mark also broke the five-year-old Service Academy Record and is a top-12 throw in the NCAA this season.
Backed by Fernstrom's 59-flat finish, the women posted three of the four-fastest 400-meter hurdles times in program history, took down the program's Freshman Sophomore and Junior Class Records, and finished within the top 10 of a 34-runner event. Sophomore Morgan Glaser posted a 60.80 finish to place ninth in the meet and move up to No. 3 on the program's all-time standings, while freshman Eleanor Borchard used the fourth-fastest time in Air Force history (61.05) to finish 10th.
The Falcons also made multiple improvements to the all-time top 10 in the shot put, as sophomore Trevin Jordan recorded a career-best throw of 17.07 meters (56'0") to move up to No. 10 on the all-time standings and join Tanner in the top 12 of the overall field.
Tanner had a stellar opening day of competition at Jack Rose Track, as he added an NCAA-leading throw of 66.30 meters (217'6") to earn the top collegiate finish – and place second overall – in the 51-thrower discus event. The senior was one of two throwers to place within the top 15 of the large field, as sophomore Evan Keefe added a 15th-place distance of 54.67 meters (179'4").
Julie Segroves and Zachary DeWalt broke the program's Freshman Class Record during Air Force Top 5 performances in their respective events. Segroves improved her own No. 2 pole vault mark with a 4.06-meter (13'3¾") clearance that tied for fourth in a 37-jumper event and broke the Class standard that Kat Tomczak had held since 2016, while DeWalt moved up to No. all-time at Air Force in the 200-meter dash after posting a time of 20.85 that was third out of 63 runners and lowered the Freshman mark Asher Jenkins set last spring.
Sophomore Sarah Reynolds continued her rewrite of the record book, as she posted the fourth-fastest 100-meter time in Air Force history (12.12) and moved up to No. 20 on the program's all-time high jump standings (1.63m/5'4¼"). The sophomore added a wind-aided 14.36 in the 100-meter hurdles, which is the fastest all-condition time of the season for the Falcons.
Junior Kayla Beach also matched her Air Force No. 2 mark in the long jump on Thursday, as she recorded a distance of 5.84 meters (19'2") to finish sixth in a field of 37.
Elsewhere at the Long Beach State facility, senior Jettason Rose (10,32w, fifth) and Jenkins (10.41w, 11th) placed within the top 12 of an 84-sprinter 100-meter field, while junior Ryan Hajek placed within the top-half of the 400-meter hurdles (48.96, 24th). The freshmen duo of Cadee Alder and Chris Atunku collected top-10 finishes in their field events, as Alder recorded a distance of 43.75 meters (143'5") to finish sixth in the javelin and Atunku cleared 1.96 meters (6'5") to tie for seventh in the high jump.
The Falcons are back at Jack Rose Track tomorrow (April 17) to kick off the Beach Invitational, while members of the program's distance squad will be in Azusa for the Bryan Clay Invitational.
