Offensively, Landon Boyd went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Kayden Bradshaw brought in three runs while Walker Zapp and Wyatt Hanoian were each responsible for two apiece. With two stolen bases on the day by Christian Taylor and Ben Niednagel, the Falcons are three away from breaking the program record.
The starting pitcher, Bowen Brantingham went two scoreless innings with two strikeouts before Jordan Watkins entered for 3.2 frames of relief, allowing a trio of runs and striking out two Spartans. Gunner Gilmore and Sam Hentges both made appearances with one run allowed. To close the game, Patrick Davidson (1-0) threw four scoreless innings with four strikeouts to pick up his first win of the season.
The Birds were first on the board, scoring one run in the bottom of the first. To open, Bradshaw was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a single from Niednagel. Zapp recorded an RBI groundout to plate the first run.
In the bottom of two, AF tacked on another run, 2-0. The first batter, Luke Elmore, was hit by a pitch and scored when Garrett Hutchins sent a double out to center field.
A solo, 386-foot shot from Hanoian extended the Falcons' lead to 3-0 in the third.
San Jose State plated four runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-3 advantage and extended it to 5-3 in the seventh.
A huge eight-run bottom of the eighth propelled Air Force back in front, 11-5. Hanoian started the frame with a walk, advanced to second on an error during Elmore's at-bat, and made it to third on a single from Hutchins, who was substituted for pinch runner T.J. Oster, that loaded the bases. Back-to-back singles from Taylor and Boyd plated a trio of runs for the lead before Bradshaw followed with a bases-clearing homer, his fifth of the season. After Niednagel drew a walk, he went home on a Zapp triple to deep left center. The final run came from an RBI groundout by Hanoian.
The Spartans threatened with bases loaded in the top of the ninth, but Davidson closed the game with a strikeout.
Air Force will head to Greeley, Colo., to take on Northern Colorado on Tuesday April 28 at 3 p.m. MT.
