ALL-TIME VERSUS THE EAGLES
Air Force has played four total matches against EWU and sits at an all-time record of 2-0-2, extending back to the first matchup between the two programs in 2011, a 3-2 Falcon win. The most recent meeting between the programs was a 2-2 draw in their first matchup in Washington last season. In that match, Annika Jost recorded a goal.
LAST TIME OUT
Air Force (5-2-0) rallied for a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Denver (1-5-2) Thursday evening at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. Annika Jost and Chase Borntreger scored for the Falcons, while Sydney Nelms recorded five saves.
The win marked Air Force's first victory over Denver since 2015 and its first on the Pioneers' home field.
Denver took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute despite Air Force recording six shots and seven corner kicks in the opening half. The Falcons quickly answered after halftime, with Jost finding the rebound on her own shot and finishing in the 47th minute to level the match.
Air Force pushed for the 2-1 advantage in the 73rd minute when Borntreger intercepted a Denver throw-in and fired from distance, sending her shot just under the crossbar for her first goal of the season and the game-winner.
SENIOR SPOTLIGHT
Prior to kickoff on Sunday, Air Force will honor their six seniors: Chase Borntreger, Ava Carpentier, Addie Doyle, Kendall Rippley, Lauren Steinlage, and Clara Teigland.
Three Falcons (Carpentier, Rippley, and Steinlage) were selected to fill pilot slots and will report for pilot training upon graduation. Borntreger will commission as an Intelligence Officer, Doyle plans to attend medical school to become an Air Force physician, and Teigland will commission as a Civil Engineer.
FALCONS IN THE FINAL THIRD
Air Force has wasted little time putting pressure on opposing defenses, firing off 101 shots through seven matches, including 49 on target, while finding the back of the net 18 times. The Falcons have generated chances from across the attacking third, with Annika Jost and Maddy Walsh leading the team with 15 and 14 shots, respectively. Addie Doyle and Kendall Rippley follows with 11 attempts, while Mai Mateaki has added nine.
The Falcons have outscored their opponents 16-7 on the season, ranking 45th nationally in scoring offense. Air Force has found success throughout all 90 minutes, but have been more of a second-half team, scoring 11 goals in after halftime, compared to five in the first half.
BETWEEN THE POSTS
Sophomore Sydney Nelms has provided a steady presence between the posts, starting five matches and logging all 450 minutes while collecting 33 saves and three wins on the season. She has helped anchor an Air Force defense that has posted two shutouts through the Falcons' first six matches.
Nelms recorded her first career shutout in Air Force's 4-0 victory over Navy, turning aside six shots to earn her second career win. Against Creighton, she kept the Falcons within striking distance with eight saves while allowing just one goal, finishing the match with an .889 save percentage.
She was tested early and often against Texas A&M, facing 11 shots on target and making a season-high nine saves while allowing two goals. With four starts under her belt, Nelms has quickly established herself as a reliable last line of defense for the Falcons.
A LOOK AT EASTERN WASHINGTON
EWU holds a record of 5-2, falling in their last pair of games to Wyoming (2-0) and Grand Canyon (2-0) but have logged four shutouts. So far, they have outscored their opponents 9-5 with 38 shots on goal. Offensively, Mia Miconi leads Eastern Washington with three goals for six points, while two Eagles have a pair of goals apiece. In goal, Payton Hyde holds a 0.71 GAA and has made 44 saves and allowed five goals.
