Samuelson leads Falcons on first day of Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Senior Grant Samuelson led the Air Force golf team in the opening round of the 57^th Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 19, at Eisenhower Golf Course at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Samuelson shot a career-best 70 (-2) in the opening round of the team event on the Eisenhower Blue Course. He shot 32 on the front and at one point, birdied five of six holes. Sophomore Ben Zeiler made five birdies on the day for a one-under 71. Senior Carson Baker shot 75, that included an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole. Freshman Daniel Chazen shot 76 and senior Eli Huntington shot 78.

Colorado and Utah Valley are tied for team lead at 280 (-8). UTEP, Denver, Wyoming and UC Davis are all tied for third at 285 (-3). Air Force is in 12^th place at 292 (+4).

In the individual event on the Eisenhower Silver Course, Colorado's Gavin Amella leads the field with an opening round 65 (-7). San Jose State's Joey Allen is second with a 66. Air Force freshman Jack Halloran is in fifth place after a collegiate career best 69 (-3). Halloran made four birdies and had an eagle on the par-5 fourth hole. Freshman Grant Baer shot 76 and senior Karson Knox shot 77 in the first collegiate event of their careers.

The second round of the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational begins at 8:30 am MT on Sunday, Sept. 20, at Eisenhower Golf Course.
