Lt. Col. Matt McCraw enters his fourth season as an assistant coach in 2024-25 with Air Force men’s basketball. McCraw is a 2007 USAFA graduate.
An integral point guard on many of Air Force’s most successful teams, McCraw played on the historic 2003-04 Mountain West Championship team under Scott. He also played on the record-setting 2005-06 NCAA team and the 2006-07 NIT team.
McCraw has served the last 14 years as an active duty Air Force officer in the Nuclear and Missiles Operations career field. He has served in several roles within both the Department of Defense and Department of Energy, to include completing a prestigious Intermediate Developmental Education fellowship. McCraw holds a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership and will serve as a liaison for the Academy’s Nuclear Weapons and Strategy Minor.
A native of Lakewood, California, McCraw was a four-year letterman at the Academy and finished his career ranked 19th in school history in scoring (now 24th) with 1,040 points. McCraw is one of the best shooters in program history, ranking first in career three point shooting percentage (46.5) and three point shooting percentage for a season (50.9 percent in 2004-05). He ranks second all-time in career free throw percentage (85.2).
As a freshman, McCraw immediately showcased his shooting touch, making 49 percent from three-point land and 91 percent from the free throw line. He was a key cog in the team that went 22-7 to earn the program’s first-ever conference title.
Inserted into the starting lineup as a sophomore, McCraw helped lead the Falcons to an 18-12 record in 2004-05. He shot 51 percent from both the field and three-point range, averaging 9.0 points per game. His 50.9 percent shooting from three point range remains a school record.
As a junior, McCraw led the Falcons to another NCAA Tournament appearance as the team went 24-7, setting a record for highest win percentage. He averaged 10.8 ppg while making 70 three’s on the season.
As a senior, McCraw helped guide the Falcons to a program record 26 wins (26-9 overall record) en route to a semifinal run in the postseason NIT. He averaged 10.9 ppg as a senior, shooting 47 percent from three-point range, and also tied for the team-lead with 101 assists.
McCraw’s basketball career continued in the Air Force after graduation. In 2009 he was selected to represent the Air Force in the All Armed Forces Basketball Tournament, leading the Air Force team to a 6-0 sweep. In 2011, he was selected to compete on the All Armed Forces Team in the international competition at the CISM World Games held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where he averaged 19 points per game, was named the best shooting guard of the tournament, and helped secure the bronze medal for Team USA.
Most recently on Oct. 1, 2021, McCraw was promoted to Lt. Col.
McCraw and his wife Stacey are the proud parents of sons, Jace (9) and Evan (5).
