Josh Loeser, a USAG and conference coach of the year, is in his sixth season as the head coach of the Air Force men’s gymnastics team. The Falcons have soared to new heights under Loeser’s watch, accounting for the program’s first-ever NCAA champion and the team’s best national finish in more than 50 years.
The Falcons history-making run began in 2023, when the Falcons finished eighth at the NCAA Championships – a placement that marked the program’s best national finish since 1972. Air Force, which returned to the top of the podium at the All-Academy Championships that year, finished third at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships to equal the program’s highest conference finish. Loeser, who was named the MPSF Coach of the Year, saw Patrick Hoopes claim NCAA All-America honors on the pommel horse, Garrett Braunton win the program’s first MPSF title in four years (high bar) and three Falcons combine for four individual titles at the USAG Collegiate Nationals.
The success continued in 2024, as Loeser coached Hoopes to the NCAA title on the pommel horse – the first-ever NCAA championship for the Air Force gymnastics program. As a team, the Falcons defended their All-Academy title and regained the title at the USAG Collegiate Nationals, where Loeser was named the USAG Coach of the Year and Air Force claimed individual titles in five of the six events, as well as the all-around. The team earned another top-10 finish at the NCAA Championships in 2024, while four Falcons advanced to the event finals. The national title was just one piece of a stellar campaign for Loeser and Hoopes, as the latter captured his second selection to the U.S. Men’s National Team, finished sixth in his international debut at the 2024 Baku World Cup, won the Winter Cup and finished first at the 2024 Olympic Trials.
Although his first season was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic that halted all NCAA activities in 2020, Loeser coached Frankie Valentin to his first Winter Cup appearance and saw several gymnasts in a senior-less lineup impact the Academy’s all-time standings. A third-place finish at the 2021 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships highlighted Loeser’s second season, as Air Force defeated California for just the second time in program history to secure the program’s highest conference finish ever. A total of eight Falcons qualified to the NCAA National Qualifier in 2021, with Valentin and Braunton advancing to the finals. The team returned to the NCAA Championships in 2022, where they picked up a 10th-place finish, and Braunton – one of three Air Force finalists – captured All-America honors following a third-place finish on the high bar.
Loeser became the program’s 10th head coach in August 2019, after spending two years as the assistant coach for the Men’s Resident Team Program at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. During his tenure, Loeser coached gymnasts at the 2017 World Championships, the 2018 Birmingham World Cup and the 2018 Pan Am Championships, where Team USA won gold. In 2019, he saw four gymnasts re-qualify to the national team at the Winter Cup Challenge and another four requalify at the U.S. Championships, while capturing a pair of national titles. Loeser, who took two national team members to Japan for a senior team camp in the summer of 2019, continued to coach former Academy standout Timmy Wang, after he joined the USOPTC through the Air Force World Class Athlete Program.
Prior to his stint at the Training Center, Loeser spent five years at the Academy as an assistant coach (2013-17). A four-time USAG Assistant Coach of the Year, Loeser coached Air Force to five-straight USAG team titles and five consecutive team appearances at the NCAA Championships after the program had made just two trips to the national meet in the previous 13 years. He helped the Falcons account for six NCAA All-America awards during a four-year span and saw Wang become a finalist for the Nissen-Emery award. During his tenure, the Falcons had six selections to the prestigious Winter Cup, claimed 15 individual USAG titles and earned 49 USAG All-America awards.
Loeser initially joined the Academy staff in the fall of 2012, following a two-year stint at Reflex Gymnastics and Cheer Academy in Pearland, Texas. He spent one year as an assistant coach for boys in Level 4-10, before being promoted to the Boy’s Team Director in June 2011. During his tenure, three Level 10 gymnasts qualified to the Junior Olympic Nationals and the Level 4 team won the Texas South state championships.
Before joining the Reflex staff, Loeser served as an assistant coach for Level 4-10 gymnasts at Gulf Coast Gymnastics in his hometown of Alvin, Texas, where he coached the boy’s team to the Texas Muscle Man Championship title in 2009. He also coached at several gymnastics camps, including three summers at the Academy’s Falcon Sports Camps. Loeser also worked with three-time Olympian John Roethlisberger at the FlipFest Gymnastics Camp in Crossville, Tenn., where he coached boys and girls from levels 4-10.
A three-time state qualifier in the all-around for Gulf Gymnastics during his prep days, Loeser spent three years as a member of the Air Force gymnastics team. Following his Academy career, he spent two years in the Air Force, serving as an Admissions/Dispositions Clerk and Member Services Clerk at Lackland AFB, Texas.
Loeser is a 2012 graduate of the University of Houston, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics.
