The 2025 campaign will mark assistant coach Kaylyn Farrell's fourth season as a member of the Air Force coaching staff. Farrell's primary duties include assisting the Falcons goalkeepers.
The 2024 season saw the goalkeepers accumulate 67 total saves with a .705 save percentage across the 1,620 minutes played. Under Farrell’s coaching, starting keeper, Kylie McElroy logged six shutouts (double the amount in 2023) and 54 saves out of the 15 games she played.
In 2023, Sydney Davis led the Falcons with 13 starts in 18 matches, totaling 57 saves. Her 57 saves were ninth-most among Mountain West goalies. Cammi Bych also appeared in eight matches, making five starts, as the senior registered a 1.02 goals against average and a save rate of 82%. Davis graduated from the Academy with a career 1.23 GAA, the second-best career average in program history. Bych was not far behind, as her 1.37 GAA stands as the fifth-best rate in Air Force history.
Farrell's tutelage aided Davis, who managed a breakout junior season in 2022. Davis led the Mountain West in save percentage (.863) and was third in goals against average (.800). In spite of starting just 13 matches, Davis became one of only 11 goalkeepers in Falcons history to record at least five shutouts in a season. Having allowed just 10 goals to 63 saves, her 4.85 saves per game was second in the Mountain West. Davis recorded a 5-4-3 record in her first true starting action for the Falcons.
On April 5, 2022, head coach Laura Busby announced the addition of Kaylyn Farrell to the Air Force women's soccer staff.
"Kaylyn and I met while we were teammates on the Colorado Pride W-League Team in 2015," said Busby. "She was a phenomenal player and is an even better person. She is one of the few goalkeepers I know who is just as good with her feet as she is with her hands. I have no doubt that our young keepers will be learning from one of the best."
Farrell joins the Air Force staff after serving as graduate assistant coach at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. Farrell worked with the goalkeepers during the Mountain Lion’s 2019 campaign as they went 19-2-0 and entered NCAA DII tournament as the number one seed in the South-Central Region. During the 2019 season, UCCS claimed their program's first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season title. Farrell coached goalkeeper Mollee Swift before she went on to have a decorated career at Louisiana State University. At UCCS, Swift allowed only 10 goals during the Mountain Lion’s 2019 campaign. She registered a 0.57 goals against average and obtained several all-conference and all-region awards.
During her collegiate career, Farrell (Smith) played two seasons at Virginia Tech before transferring to the University of Washington. At Virginia Tech, Farrell (Smith) started each NCAA Tournament match her freshman year as they reached the Sweet 16. She then started all 21 games during her sophomore campaign reaching the second round of the NCAA tournament. She remains second in school history in goals against average and was named to the ACC Honor Roll both years. Farrell (Smith) played in 10 games as a Husky, and then went on to play one year at the Division II level at UCCS while earning a master’s degree. Farrell was named RMAC Goalkeeper of the Year and First Team All-South Central Region as the Mountain Lions reached the second round of the NCAA tournament. Farrell also has playing experience at the semi-professional level, having competed for the Colorado Pride in the W-League, UWS and the WPSL during their 2015, 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2021 campaigns.
Farrell holds a United Soccer Coaches Goalkeeping Level 3 Diploma. She has coached on the West Region ODP staff, Dynasty Goalkeeping Academy staff and at the club level for Pride Soccer Club and Real Salt Lake Soccer Club. Farrell has also worked for several years as a private goalkeeper coach for goalkeepers ages 6-18.
Farrell holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Counseling and Human Services. She has worked as a licensed clinical mental health therapist and a school counselor. She and her husband Grant are Colorado natives and enjoy golfing in their free time.
