Tom Hunter, no stranger to coaching along the Front Range, is in his third season as an assistant coach for the Air Force volleyball team.
During the delayed 2020 season, Hunter helped Air Force to a 7-6 record in Mountain West action – a win total that equaled the most conference victories in Air Force Division I history and marked the program’s first conference-winning season at the DI level. Working with the Falcons’ front row players, Hunter has seen at least one of his athletes claim all-conference honors during each of his first two seasons, while Joi Harvey captured the program’s first MW Freshman of the Year award in 2020.
Hunter, who joined the Air Force program after spending four years as the head coach at Poudre High School in Fort Collins (2015-18), spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Northern Colorado (2007-14), where he helped the Bears to three appearances at the NCAA Tournament. Six athletes directly under his coaching combined for 13 all-conference awards and a UNC middle attacker was named to the first- or second- all-conference team every year. He also saw his athletes earn Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year awards from the Big Sky in 2011.
Prior to his stint at Northern Colorado, Hunter served as a club head coach of the NORCO Volleyball Club (2005-07) and the junior varsity coach at Poudre (2005-06). He also coached the boys and girls volleyball teams at a pair of high schools in California (Helix Charter: 2003-05, Valhalla HS: 2000-03), accounting for six conference championships, the CIF championship title and the top Division 2 boys' team in San Diego Country while at Valhalla.
In addition to coaching at the prep level, Hunter has served as an educator in California and Colorado.
A 1999 graduate of San Diego State University, Hunter had an impressive collegiate career as a member of the Aztecs' volleyball team. A two-time all-conference selection, he was the only player in the country to be ranked among the top 15 in blocks, kills and hitting percentage. In addition to serving as the team captain and earning the team's MVP award, Hunter received the Malik Award for maintaining the highest GPA of any male athlete at San Diego State. He was also a six-time member of the Dean's List and captured the Monty Scholar-Athlete Award five times.
Hunter received his bachelor’s degree in social science from SDSU in 1999 and his Masters in sports administration from Northern Colorado in 2010. He has been married to his wife, Andria, for more than 20 years and the couple has one son, Logan.
