The Air Force men's gymnastics team opens its season in Norman, Oklahoma, in a triangular meet with the universities of Oklahoma and Iowa.
"This meet will really test our team, since OU and Iowa are two of the top teams in the nation," said head coach Lou Burkel.
"Host Oklahoma is coming off a banner season where they captured the Rocky Mountain Open Championship, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship and finished second at the NCAA Championships. Iowa is also a formidable challenge, having won the Windy City Invitational, besting 2001 NCAA Champion Ohio State University, " said Burkel.
"It is always difficult coming back after the semester and holiday break, and we looked a bit shaky at our intrasquad last Saturday. But our practices this week have shown a lot of improvement and enthusiasm. We are going to Norman to do a great job and we expect nothing less. The competition begins at 2 pm, Sunday, January 20 at Lloyd Noble Center."
"Our men and women's teams will open their home competition when they host the 2002 Rocky Mountain Open Championships on January 25-26. The men's team and all around competition begins at 7 pm, Friday and includes Arizona State, Army, Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma, the Olympic Training Center and Washington. The event finals kick off at 1 pm on Saturday. The women's competition will begin at 7 pm on Saturday, and includes Illinois State and Winona State Universities. All home gymnastics competitions are held in the West Cadet Gymnasium. We hope to see you at many of our competitions!"
