Senior Thomas Clark broke a scoreless tie in the 87th minute to lead the Air Force men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory Friday over Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponent Sacramento State in the conference opener for both teams.
Clark snuck a shot from in front of the net past Sacramento State goalie Matt McDougall after taking a back pass from freshman Skyler Clarkston. Clarkston had taken a pass off a corner kick by freshman Daniel Wasson.
In a game statistically dominated by the Falcons, McDougall kept the Hornets in the game with three outstanding saves. He stopped two point blank shots by Falcon sophomore Marcus Sagastume in the first half, then stoned AFA's Colin Eames in the second stanza. Eames and Clark each hit the post with a shot as well.
Air Force (7-5-1, 1-0) took 19 total shots, with seven of them on goal, compared to five total shots for the Hornets. Three of those were on net and saved by Air Force goalie Mike Taylor, who recorded his eighth career shutout. McDougall finished with six saves for Sacramento State (3-6-3, 0-1).
Air Force continues play against Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponents on Sunday, Oct. 13 when it hosts San Jose State at 1 p.m. at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
