Gymnastics Heads To USAG Championships

U.S.A.F.A., Colo.- The Air Force men's and women's gymnastics teams head out to Springfield, Mass., this week for the 2002 USA Gymnastics National Collegiate Championships April 11-13, hosted by Springfield College. The competition begins Thursday afternoon at 5:30 with the women's team preliminaries in Springfield College's Blake Arena. The women's team final and all-around will be Friday afternoon at 1:30 followed by the men's team/club finals and all-around Friday evening at 7. The men's and women's individual finals will be at 7 Saturday evening. The competing men's teams include UC Santa Barbara, MIT, Southern Connecticut State, Springfield College, Air Force, Navy, Vermont, and William & Mary. Washington and Arizona State will be competing in the men's club team division. The women's teams include UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, Centenary, Cornell, Seattle Pacific, Southern Connecticut State, Texas Women's University, and Air Force.
The women's team returns this year as the 2001 team champion, including last year's beam champion, C1C (Sr.) Bethany Stott. They finished the season 8-8 overall with a second-place finish at this year's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Women's Gymnastics Championships at home and fifth at the NCAA North Central Region Women's Gymnastics Championships at Denver Univ. The men's team finished the season 2-15 overall with a fifth-place finish the MPSF Men's Gymnastics Championships and sent five gymnasts to the NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships in Norman, Okla., hosted by the Univ. of Oklahoma.
