The Air Force women's basketball team struggled defensively against Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, giving up 81 points. The Islanders came into the game averaging just 56 points per game, but a 52.7 percent shooting effort helped guide the team to an 81-61 win over the Falcons.
Although the Falcons suffered the 20-point road loss, the game was much closer than the final score would indicate. Air Force led by as many as seven points late in the first half. They shot a solid 46.7 percent (14-for-30) for the half, scoring 37 points. Unfortunately, the defense allowed the Islanders to shoot over 50 percent from the floor and score 42 first-half points. Despite the strong shooting effort, Air Force trailed 42-37 at the break.
Air Force was within 10 points of the lead most of the second half, but could not contain the Islander offense. The Islanders continued its hot shooting, hitting on 53.7 percent of their second half shots. Terra Andrews led the charge with a game-high 26 points. Kristin Andrews added 22 points, while Mandie Vinck chipped in 14. They have lost just one home game in eight games.
Jennifer Roesch scored a career-high 19 points for the Falcons. LaToya Howell added 19 points, and with nine assists narrowly missed getting her fourth double-double of the season, needing just one assist.
Air Force (6-7) will next kick off conference play on Saturday, Jan. 18th, in Albuquerque with a league game against New Mexico. The Falcons are looking to break a 39-game conference losing streak.
