Courtney Davidson scored a season-high 26 points to lead Navy to a 73-60 victory over the Air Force women's basketball team. The Falcons trailed by 16 points late in the game and mounted a furious comeback to pull to within five points of the lead, but it was as close as they would get. The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Falcons, who fall to 3-7 overall. Navy improves to 5-6.
The Falcons took a 5-3 lead out of the gate, but it would prove to be their only lead of the game. The Midshipmen would extend its lead to double digits and at the half they led by 10 points, 36-26. After nailing back-to-back three pointers midway through the second half, Navy held a 16-point advantage. Air Force then mounted its comeback, shaving 11 points off the lead but couldn't overcome the large deficit.
Air Force was 25-of-28 (.893 percent) from the charity stripe, its best percentage of the season. But it wasn't enough to overcome 25 turnovers and a poor shooting night. The Falcons were 16-of-53 (30.2 percent) from the field and notched just three treys on 19 attempts from beyond the arc.
Four Falcon players finished the game in double figures in scoring. Shawna Neff led the way with 12 points, followed by Jennifer Roesch, Amoy Jackson and Gwen Grove, each with 10 points. Grove was 10-of-10 from the free throw line. Roesch led the team with seven rebounds, while Neff had a team-high six steals.
Davidson was 6-of-11 from the field, including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc to lead all scorers. Abi Campbell added 14 points for Navy.
The Falcons return home and have just a few days to regroup before hosting Army on Friday, Jan. 2nd. Tip off is at 5 p.m. as the game is the first of a doubleheader with the men's team. The Black Knights are off to a strong start, opening the season with an 8-2 record.
Additional Notes: The Falcons failed in its attempt for their first-ever four-game winning streak. They were riding a three-game winning streak, which was tied for the longest since moving to Division I ... Air Force has never beaten Navy in Annapolis, losing both attempts ... Navy leads the overall series 3-1.
