The Air Force lacrosse team opened its season with a 13-8 loss to Duke at the Denver Face-Off Tournament. Seven different Falcons scored, but it wasn't enough against a high-powered Blue Devil offense.
The Falcons came out strong in the first quarter, taking a 2-1 lead off goals by Kyle Warf and Jonathan French. Dave Brown added a third goal and at the end of the first quarter, the teams were tied.
The second quarter was dominated by the Blue Devils, who outscored the Falcons 5-0 to take an 8-3 halftime lead. Air Force missed nine shots in the quarter.
"Our team played hard," head coach Fred Acee said. "But we had a bad second quarter and could never recover."
Duke opened the second half with a goal before Michael Colosimo ended the scoring drought with back-to-back goals. By the end of the game, both teams had scored five second-half goals, but it was the second quarter that was the difference in the game.
Air Force outshot Duke 38-36 in the game. They also had more ground balls (32-30). William Arnold notched 12 saves in the game. William Keheler, James Borrell and Eric Lederer added fourth-quarter goals for the Falcons.
The Falcons will play their second game of the tournament on Sunday, Feb. 23rd, against Manhattan College. Face off is set for 10 a.m.
