NORMAN, Okla. - The Air Force women's gymnastics team dropped a dual meet to Oklahoma in its first road meet of the season on Friday, Jan. 23. The Falcons fell to the No. 21 Sooners, 197.150-188.650, in front of the largest crowd to ever watch a women's gymnastics meet in Norman, Okla., at the Lloyd Noble Center.
Senior Jessa Liegl (Lincoln, Neb.) was the only Falcon to finish within the top five of any individual event, as she placed fifth on the uneven bars with a score of 9.800. Liegl also recorded a 9.650 on the vault to finish eighth, en route to a sixth-place finish in the all-around (37.450)
The Falcons also received high scores from sophomore Lauren Robison (Garner, N.C.), who was the top Falcon finisher in the all-around - finishing fourth with a score of 38.350. Contributing to the all-around mark were three matching scores of 9.575 on the vault, uneven bars and balance beam, as well as 9.625 on the floor.
Oklahoma dominated the competition, winning every event by over a point. The Sooners claimed the top six spots on the vault and floor exercise. They also took five of the top six spots on the balance beam, as Air Force senior Erin Maguire (Pocatello, Idaho) claimed sixth place with a 9.750 to break up the Sooner-sweep. Maguire also tied for sixth on the floor, tying Oklahoma's Ashley Cooney with a 9.825.
Air Force and Oklahoma will meet again tomorrow (Jan. 24) night, when they travel to Denton, Texas, for a quad-meet with Texas Woman's University and Southern Utah at 7 p.m. It will be the second time in as many weeks that the Falcons have faced off against TWU, as Air Force narrowly defeated the Pioneers (191.650-191.325) last weekend during the Rocky Mountain Open at the Academy.
