Falcons Finish Fourth at TWU Quad

DENTON, Texas - The Air Force women's gymnastics team concluded its second meet in as many days on Saturday, Jan. 24, with a fourth-place finish at a quadrangular in Denton, Texas. The Falcons earned 187.275 points to finish behind meet winner Oklahoma (197.300), Southern Utah (193.025) and host Texas Woman's University (192.200).
Senior Erin Maguire (Pocatello, Idaho) recorded the highest Air Force finish of the evening, as she registered a 9.875 on the balance beam to finish second of the 24 competitors in the event. Freshman Sashonna Iwaniec (Ligonier, Pa.) also had a fine showing in the event, tying for ninth with a 9.775.
As a team, the Falcons finished second on the vault, scoring a 47.950. The Sooners posted a 49.200 to run away with the event, but the remaining three teams all posted scores within a .725 margin. Junior Jessa Liegl (Lincoln, Neb.) was the highest scoring Falcon, registering a 9.625 on the apparatus. Although she finished in 10th overall, she posted the second-highest score by a gymnast that did not belong to OU.
Right behind Liegl on the vault were Iwaniec, Maguire and senior Rebecca Lewis (Plano, Texas), who finished tied for 11th, with a 9.600 mark.
On the parallel bars, sophomore Lauren Robison (Garner, N.C.) posted the top mark of any Air Force gymnast, scoring a 9.500 to finish in a tie for 13th.
Maguire was also the top Falcon scorer on the floor with a 13th-place finish (9.725). In addition to the individual events, Maguire earned a sixth-place finish in the all-around, registering a combined total of 37.775. She led a quartet of Falcons - Iwaniac (37.725), Robison (37.125), Liegl (37.050) and Lewis (34.650).
The Falcons continue on the road next weekend (Jan. 31) - this time just a drive up I-25. Air Force will face off against Denver and Utah State at the Hamilton Gymnasium in Denver, at 6 p.m. on Saturday evening.
