KINGSTON, R.I. - Despite Jessa Liegl's 39.350 performance in the all-around, the Air Force women's gymnastics team suffered a 191.050-190.225 loss to Rhode Island on Sunday, Feb. 8, in Kingston, R.I.
Although the Falcons finished on the lower end of the total score, a member of the Falcons' squad posted with the top score on every event.
Junior Jessa Liegl (Lincoln, Neb.) won three events, en route to posting the top score in the all-around. Liegl registered the highest scores on the vault (9.825), bars (9.850) and floor (9.825). Also contributing to the winning all-around score of 39.350 was a second-place score of 9.850 on the beam.
The 39.350 is just .050 shy of the school record that Laura Frank holds.
Senior Laura Frank (Midland, Pa.) won the remaining event, posting the top beam score of 9.875. Frank also tied with senior Erin Maguire (Pocatello, Idaho) for a second-place finish on the vault (9.800), as the Falcons won the event with a team season-high total of 48.675 (just .025 off of the school record of 48.700).
In fact, every member of the Air Force vault team finished within the top-five. Sophomore Lauren Robison (Garner, N.C.) and senior Becky Lewis (Plano, Texas) tied for fourth with matching scores on 9.625, while freshman Sashonna Iwaniec (Ligonier, Pa.) finished fifth with a 9.525.
The Falcons return home on Monday, Feb. 16, when they host Denver at the Cadet West Gymnasium. It will be the second time in three weeks that Air Force will face off with the Pioneers. The competition is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
